Divot Society History
In 1987 the founder member’s of the Divot Society
(Steads, Big Lew, Smackit, Hero and Sevi) met in the fine summer months at Farnham
a par 3 course to flex their rusty golf skills and to laugh at each other’s antics.
For some this was their first taste of a “ mashy niblick” and early scorecards were
littered with double figures. Wayward tee shots, flailing irons, scuffed chips and stupid
putts were all practiced to perfection. However all this would soon become a distant memory
as the bright lights of Guildford’s hostelries came into view. (The start of the post match
drinking tradition)
It was soon realised that travelling afar and drinking was taking it’s toll, so a new venue
was established Hoebridge near Woking. This testing course took the society to a new level
and membership began to grow (Young Mur, Bernard Stoney and the Tartan Tickler) Golf had by
now become an all year round event. Suddenly par 3 courses were considered “Mickey Mouse” and
a full 18 holes was required and it is at this time that a move to the ancestral home of
Gatton Manor was first made.
With the settling into new surroundings and the endless
recruitment
in public houses the membership grew and grew. Competitions, challenges and tours all became
fixtures on the yearly calendar. Allied to this a Chairman, Secretary and Treasury were
appointed and an AGM was established.
In 1997 to commemorate 10 years of the society, the first tour abroad was undertaken.
In 2004 membership now stands at 20.
We now play 4 Majors every year (Easter Stableford,
Summer Tour, Autumn Masters & The Yuletide Challenge) and this year has seen the addition
of ‘The Coroner’s Cup’ which is a one day challenge in memory of our members who have
taken an early bath.
During the winter we play a Divot Challenge every 3 weeks and from April to October we
have a weekly Divot Challenge.
